Vaginitis is condition where the lining of the vagina becomes inflamed.
There are a number of causes for vaginitis including a non-infectious vaginitis. Non-infectious vaginitis is when the vaginal inflamation is caused by irritants such as detergents, fabric softners, and douches. Allergic reactions can also account for vaginal inflamation which can be caused by sanitary napkins as well.
Infectious vaginitis is when the underlying cause is a becateria or yeast. One of the commonly caused bacteria is called Trichomoniasis which causes Trichomonas Vaginalis. It is important to note that your unprotected sex can be the contributing factor. On rare occasions, a woman has a fistula which is an unusual passage connecting the intestine to the vagina. Fistula will allow for the stool to enter the vaginal area leading to Infectious Vaginitis.
Vaginal Candidaisis, commonly knows as yeast infection is another form of vaginitis cause by the overgrowht of the yeast called Candida. This is one of the normal flora that lives in the vagina. There are a number of reasons when this can occur and it is improtant for your doctor to recognize the risk factors. For example, if you are immuno suppressed or have diabetes, you may be more likely to get this kind of vaginitis.
Bacterial Vaginosis, another form of vaginitis is more prevalent among those who smoke cigarettes, use intrauterine devices, use douching, or have multiple sexual partners. Bacterial vaginosis is not among one of the sexually transmitted infections, but it can occur in women who have never had vaginal intercourse.
